✔︎   Higher Royalties on Amazon – Up to 60% royalty (minus print costs) for paperbacks.

✔︎   Fast & Easy Process – User-friendly interface, quick publishing turnaround.

✖︎  Lower Print Quality – KDP’s print quality is decent but not as good as IngramSpark’s.

✖︎  They only offer one type of Hardcover - Case Laminate (no flaps).

✖︎  No Bulk Discounts – No price breaks for large orders (good for authors who want to order their own stock).

INGRAMSPARK

✔︎   Better Print Quality – More printing options, better colour printing, higher-quality paper, and better hardcovers.

✔︎   Bulk Discounts – Discounts for authors who buy copies in bulk.

✔︎   More Trim Sizes & Formats – A wider selection of book sizes and binding options compared to KDP.

CONS

✖︎  Upfront Costs – Charges a setup fee ($49 per format) and fees for revisions ($25 per file update).

✖︎  Lower Royalties Compared to KDP – Typically, 40% royalty on wholesale print sales (vs. KDP’s 60%).

✖︎  Longer Processing Time – Slower publishing process compared to KDP.

✖︎  Returns Can Be Costly – If you enable bookstore returns, you could be charged for unsold books.

Which One Should You Choose?

▶ If your main goal is Amazon sales → KDP

▶ If you want bookstores & libraries to stock your book → IngramSpark

▶ If you want hardcovers or better print quality → IngramSpark

▶ If you want to save money on setup & updates → KDP

Many authors use BOTH:

▶ Use KDP for Amazon (higher royalties, no fees).

▶ Use IngramSpark for bookstores, libraries, and global distribution.

Can I Use Both KDP and Ingramspark for the Same Book?

Yes, you can use both KDP and IngramSpark for the same book, but you need to set it up correctly to avoid conflicts. Many authors do this to get the best of both platforms:

▶  Use KDP for Amazon sales (higher royalties, no fees).

▶  Use IngramSpark for global bookstore & library distribution (better reach, higher print quality).

You need to disable certain options on KDP to avoid issues with distribution overlap.

💡 The key is understanding where each platform distributes and making sure you don’t double-list your book in the same marketplace.

How to Use KDP and Ingramspark Together

Step 1: Publish on KDP First (For Amazon Sales)

1. Set up your book on KDP for Amazon only.

2. DO NOT enable Expanded Distribution on KDP!

  • If you enable KDP Expanded Distribution, Amazon will try to distribute your book to  bookstores via its own limited network—this can cause conflicts with IngramSpark.

  • Instead, let IngramSpark handle global distribution.

Step 2: Publish on IngramSpark (For Bookstores & Libraries)

1. Upload your book to IngramSpark with the same ISBN as your KDP paperback.

  • This is allowed because ISBNs are non-exclusive. Retailers will just source from different suppliers.

2. Enable Global Distribution on IngramSpark.

  • This will make your book available to bookstores, libraries, and wholesalers worldwide.

3. Set your bookstore discount (40-55%) and decide if you want to enable returns.

4. IngramSpark will automatically list your book on Amazon, but KDP’s version will take priority.

  • If someone orders from Amazon, the KDP version will be printed and fulfilled.

  • If a bookstore orders, the IngramSpark version will be used.

FAQ: Common Concerns When Using Both Platforms

What Happens If Amazon Shows Two Versions of My Book?

  • Sometimes, Amazon will list both the KDP and IngramSpark versions. This is normal.

  • The KDP version will always be the default for Amazon sales.

  • If the IngramSpark version appears, it’s usually marked as “Ships in 1-2 weeks” (since Amazon prefers KDP’s faster fulfillment).

Do I Need Two ISBNs if I am using both kdp and ingramspark?

  • No, you can use the same ISBN for both KDP and IngramSpark (if you own your ISBN).

  • If you use a free KDP ISBN, you cannot use it on IngramSpark. You’ll need to buy your own.

Can I Use Both KDP and IngramSpark for eBooks Too?

  • Yes, you can use both KDP and IngramSpark for eBooks, unless you enroll in KDP Select (Kindle Unlimited).

  • If you do not enroll in KDP Select, you are free to distribute your eBook on both KDP and IngramSpark, as well as other platforms like Apple Books, Kobo, and Google Play.

  • However, if you choose KDP Select, Amazon requires exclusivity for 90 days. This means you cannot publish your eBook anywhere else, including IngramSpark.

  • Best strategy for wide eBook distribution: Use KDP for Amazon sales and IngramSpark (or an aggregator like Draft2Digital) to reach other platforms.

How to Get ISBNs in the UK and U.S. for Self-Publishing

  • In the UK, ISBNs are provided by Nielsen: www.nielsenisbnstore.com

  • In the US, ISBNs are provided by Bowker: www.myidentifiers.com

  • Using Free ISBNs from KDP or IngramSpark. Both platforms offer free ISBNs, but they come with limitations:

    • KDP’s free ISBN can only be used on Amazon and lists Amazon as the publisher.

    • IngramSpark’s free ISBN can only be used through IngramSpark and lists IngramSpark as the publisher.

    • If you buy your own ISBN, you retain full control and can use it on both KDP and IngramSpark.

Important Note on ISBNs

  • Each format of your book requires a separate ISBN. This means:

    • Paperback ISBN -> One ISBN (same for both KDP and IngramSpark).

    • Hardcover ISBN -> A different ISBN (same for both KDP and IngramSpark).

    • Ebook ISBN  -> Another different ISBN (same for all platforms, unless using KDP Select, which doesn’t require one).

    • Audiobook ISBN -> not required but you can assign one if you want. Most major audiobook platforms, like Audible (ACX), Apple Books, and Google Play, use their own internal identification numbers instead of ISBNs. However, if you want to distribute your audiobook through platforms that require ISBNs (such as OverDrive for libraries), you may need one.

Do Dust Jacket and Case Laminate Hardcovers Use the Same ISBN?

  • No, each hardcover format requires a separate ISBN.

    • Even though both are hardcovers, they are considered separate editions due to the difference in format and binding. If you plan to offer both case laminate and dust jacket versions, each must have its own unique ISBN.

If I change my book’s cover or content, do I need a new ISBN?

✔︎   No New ISBN Needed (Minor Changes). You do not need a new ISBN for:

  • Cover design changes (as long as the format, title, and edition remain the same).

  • Fixing typos or minor text edits.

  • Updating the book description, author bio, or metadata.

  • Price changes.

✖︎   New ISBN Required (Major Changes). You must assign a new ISBN if you:

  • Release a new edition (significant changes to content, added/removed chapters, major rewrites).

  • Change the trim size (book dimensions).

  • Change the format (e.g., switching from paperback to hardcover).

  • Change the title or subtitle.

  • Change the language (a translated version needs a new ISBN).

Self-publishing with KDP and IngramSpark offers flexibility,

but success depends on good design and careful planning.

A well-formatted book with a strong cover significantly

impacts how readers perceive and engage with it.

If you need cover design or typesetting,
